第１章　自然

To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society. I am not solitary whilst I read and write, though nobody is with me. But if a man would be alone, let him look at the stars. The rays that come from those heavenly worlds, will separate between him and what he touches. One might think the atmosphere was made transparent with this design, to give man, in the heavenly bodies, the perpetual presence of the sublime. Seen in the streets of cities, how great they are! If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore; and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God which had been shown! But every night come out these envoys of beauty, and light the universe with their admonishing smile.

独りになるには、人は自分の部屋からも、社会からも、たっぷり離れる必要がある。そばに誰もいなくても、読んだり書いたりしていれば、独りにはなれない。だが、独りになりたければ、星を見ることだ。天界からの放射は、自分と自分が触れるものの間を分かつだろう。人は思う。天体という荘厳なる永遠のただ中にあって、大気は意図して透明に創られ、人に与えられたのだと。街路で見あげるそれらは、なんと偉大なることか。もしも千年に一夜だけしか見えないものであったなら、どれほど人は星を信じ崇拝するだろうか。そして何世代にもわたって、神の都市が眼前にひろげられた記憶を残し伝えることだろうか。だが毎夜訪れるのだ、これら美の使節は。そして、その咎めるような微笑で宇宙を灯すのだ。

The stars awaken a certain reverence, because though always present, they are inaccessible; but all natural objects make a kindred impression, when the mind is open to their influence. Nature never wears a mean appearance. Neither does the wisest man extort her secret, and lose his curiosity by finding out all her perfection. Nature never became a toy to a wise spirit. The flowers, the animals, the mountains, reflected the wisdom of his best hour, as much as they had delighted the simplicity of his childhood.

星がある種畏敬の念を呼び覚ますのは、つねにそこに見えていながら手が届かないからである。だが、その影響に心をひらくなら、あらゆる自然物がそれに似た印象をもたらすものである。自然はみすぼらしい身なりをしない。最も賢明な人物でさえその秘密を手に入れてしまうことはない。その完全性を暴くことで好奇心が失われることもない。賢明な精神に対して、自然が玩具になり果てることはない。花が、動物が、山が、最良のときの英知を反映する。単純に喜んだ子供時代と同じくらい豊かに。
