IsaacからIsaacへ

　９歳の男の子からの手紙がアシモフに返事を書かせた。
　男の子の名前はアイザック。学校でその名前をからかわれ、アイザックという名前が嫌になると言ってきたのだった。

  ぼくの名前はアイザックで、ぼくは９才です。ときどきぼくは
自分の名前がいやになります。どうしてかというと学校でほかの
子たちがそれをからかうからです。あなたはぼくが知っている
たったひとりのアイザックという有名人です。ぼくの先生があな
たのことを教えてくれました。ぼくはよかったと思いました。ど
こからあなたは名前をもらったのですか？ともだちになってくれ
ますか？どうしてもひとり必要なんです。

  My name is Isaac and I am 9. Sometimes I hate my name
because kids at school joke about it. You are the only other Isaac
I ever heard of who is famous. My teacher told me about you. I
hope that is OK. Where did you get your name from? Will you be
my friend? I sure need one.

親愛なるアイザック、
  私はお母さんのお父さん、わたしが生まれるまえに亡くなっていた
おじいさんにちなんで名前をもらいました。
　わたしのともだちはみんなわたしをアイザックと呼びますし、いま
もそう呼びますが、その名前をおかしいとは思う人はいません。
　それはほんとうにいい名前で、有名なアイザックはおおぜいいます。
　８００年前には、アイザックというふたりの皇帝がコンスタンチ
ノープルを治めていました。ロシアのレニングラードにあるいちばん
きれいな建物は、聖イサアク大聖堂です。
　いままででいちばん偉い科学者はアイザック・ニュートンです。
世界でいちばん偉いバイオリニストはアイザック・スターンです。
私ではない小説家でノーベル賞をもらったのはアイザック・バシェ
ヴィス・シンガーです。
　いつかあなたも有名になったら、ありきたりの名前でなくてよかっ
たと思うかもしれません。

Dear Isaac,
  I was named for my mother's father, my grandfather, who died
before I was born. My friends all call me Isaac and they've used
to the name now and don't think it's funny.
  Actually it's a good name and there are a number of famous
Isaacs.
  Eight hundred years ago, there were two Isaacs who reigned as
Emperor in Constantinople. One of the most beautiful buildings
in the city of Leningrad in Russia is the Cathedral of St. Isaac.
  The greatest scientist who ever lived was Isaac Newton. The
greatest violin player in the world is Isaac Stern. Another writer
besides myself, one who has won a Nobel prize, is Isaac Bashevis
Singer.
  Someday you may be famous and then you will be proud to
have a name that isn't so common it is meaningless.
