アシモフからP.G.ウッドハウスへの手紙

　アシモフはウッドハウスの愛読者だったらしい。私淑していたと言っても
よさそうだ。
　「Yours, Isaac Asimov」(65ページ)にはアシモフがウッドハウスに送った
手紙が掲載されている。

You don't know me, of course; I'm just a minor scribbler. I am,
however, a major reader of your books, having read at least 50 of
them at least 50 times each. I quote you as others quote the Bible,
and I must be depressed indeed not to cheer up just by thinking
of odd passages from the Wodehouse canon.
But I won't waste your time. It is just that you are 90 years old
and may decide some decade or other to transfer your field of
activity and make Heaven a happier place for one and all. I am
not likely to meet you there, being earmarked for the other place,
so while we are still here on Earth together, may I thank you for
more than you can possibly imagine.
One last word: It is as easy to write something that sounds like
you as it is to make brass that looks like gold. I have done it
myself. But what I do and what others do is brass. You remain
gold.

　最後に一言：何かをあなたのように書いて、その黄銅を黄金に見せ
かけることはたやすい。私は自分でもそれをしてきました。しかし私
や他の者の仕儀は黄銅。あなただけが黄金をとどめるのです。
